Recently, Movistar Plus+ CEO Daniel Domencho was interviewed by Le Marca, warning that if the piracy problem is not solved, the sports copyright model will face severe challenges.

Daniel Domencho said "a solution to combat piracy" must be found, otherwise "the sports copyright model associated with streaming TV will face very complex years, during which the loss of certain sports events may make viewers feel unhappy with the content supply." In a speech at the Barcelona Equestrian Club, Domencho explained: "43% of football viewers in Spain are through piracy, which is not socially condemned and no action should be taken at the political level."

"We must find a solution to piracy, otherwise the sports copyright model associated with streaming TV will face a very complex few years, during which the loss of certain sports events may make the audience feel dissatisfied with the content supply."

However, the executive director of Movistar Plus+ predicts that one possible way to solve this problem is to provide a better product than piracy: "Our technical disruptive ability will suppress the desire for piracy in many people, and the user experience we will provide will allow you to experience the game in ways we can't imagine."

In addition, the soaring price of sports copyrights has exacerbated the conflict. Domencho also mentioned that "sports copyright negotiations are a unique competition." Currently, Telefónica is negotiating copyrights for several events and is expected to release relevant information soon.

Domencho emphasized: "We need to be flexible to get more benefits from these investments, and we must be able to create content related to these sports and attract public attention."

"Since Movistar is a business that supports young talents and athletes as social idols, we should have the ability to tailor TV shows for athletes like Nadal or Gasol to show what they can do after retirement. We need to create content that can continue the influence of these big names and let the audience enjoy it."

In addition, the executive, also a journalist, also pointed out that because more than 50% of customers subscribe to Movistar Plus+ because of sports content: "It is really worrying when it comes to realizing the level of reliance on sports rights on the platform. Stakeholders agree that a law needs to be established to protect this."
