Leipzig s new coach: We should set high goals here, and returning to the European arena is our mission
37-year-old Ole Werner served as the new head coach of RB Leipzig this summer. At a press conference on Wednesday, he emphasized that his mission with the team is to return to the European arena.
Regarding coaching Leipzig, Werner first said: "Pressure is everywhere, and this pressure is also put on himself. All relevant parties, all the person in charge, including me, have high requirements. I am used to it, and this is completely normal."
Werner: "I think here, we should be ambitious and set high goals, because we have good conditions, both the coaching team and the team have a high level. Our task now is to work together to put all this into practice."
Leipzig ranked seventh in the Bundesliga standings last season, and ultimately failed to qualify for the European competition in the new season. Returning to the European arena is also the team's current goal. Werner stressed: "We hope to qualify for international competitions again and never set limits on ourselves in an upward position. This is my clear mission and all of us here."
"But that's more than that: RB Leipzig represents a specific style of football, which is both successful and easy to identify. Our task is to further develop this concept of competition."
Werner previously coached in Bremen and his contract was originally in 2026. He was dismissed at the end of May after announcing that he did not intend to renew his contract. He signed with Leipzig to 2027. Leipzig sports director Shefel said: "Werner convinced the management in terms of content and personality in the negotiations. We are all very, very ambitious and hope to launch an attack together."
Werner also said: "From the beginning, I had a good feeling that my ability as a coach and my proven strength are in line with the work and the philosophy of the club. This feeling has been strengthened in personal communication."
Next Monday, Werner will lead the team to train for the first time. His first test will be against regional league team Sandhausen in the first round of the German Cup on August 16, followed by the Bundesliga opening match on August 22 to challenge defending champion Bayern Munich.
